British watch brand Bremont has recently released a bespoke mechanical clock and stopwatch for the Jaguar XJ75 Platinum Concept Car, which was displayed at Pebble Beach on August 14. This marks the first time that Bremont has created a car clock.

“Jaguar is one of the world’s premier manufacturers of luxury cars and a great British brand. We are very proud to have been asked to make this clock for their XJ75 car and were keen to make something different for Jaguar. As such rather than a quartz clock we have created a beautiful mechanical clock that also has a chronograph function,” Bremont co-founder Giles English said.

The Bremont Jaguar XJ75 car clock comes in a white and black contrast theme, complementing the concept car painted in satin Matte Pearlescent White with dark chrome or gloss black exterior elements. The vehicle’s 22-inch wheels also use dual-tone black and white finishes.

“Our design teams talk a similar language when it comes to clean cut form with a sharp, sporting edge. The XJ75 Bremont clock design has superb functional clarity in its detailing and this is combined with a beautifully crafted outer metal bezel that suggests strength and longevity,” said Giles Taylor, Jaguar chief designer for the car. “It fits the crafted luxury feel of the XJ interior perfectly and all who have seen it so far ask the same question: How can I dismount it and wear it on my wrist?”

Aside from the bespoke clock created by Bremont, the XJ75 also features a 1,200-watt surround sound system provided by Bowlers & Wilkins that uses 20 speakers powered through 15 channels.

Close on the heels of Tata Motors-owned Land Rover announcing its plans to develop hybrid cars, the Indian automaker’s another [...]

Close on the heels of Tata Motors-owned Land Rover announcing its plans to develop hybrid cars, the Indian automaker’s another British subsidiary has now decided to toe the line.

Jaguar Cars, is now reportedly looking to introduce hybrid versions of its XJ and XF models in 2013-’14, using hardware developed with sister brand Land Rover, as reported by Britain’s Car magazine. The magazine has also stated that the first Jaguar hybrids could be launched soon after the planned 2013 introduction of the first Land Rover hybrid.

It was reported very recently that by the end of 2010 Land Rover will be testing the first diesel hybrid prototype called the ‘range_e’ which is being developed using a Range Rover Sport platform. Tests of this vehicle will use the existing 3.0 litre TDV6 diesel engine featuring a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. The goal is to achieve a range of 20 miles using electric power only emitting less than 100 g/km of CO2 emissions and to achieve a top speed of around 120 mph.

According to ‘Car’, Jaguar’s hybrid system, which also will employ the ZF hybrid transmission, will be applied eventually to every model in the range. The Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) engineering centre in the British Midlands is developing both diesel- and gasoline-electric hybrid powertrains for use across both model ranges,” the magazine said. The system will “quickly spread across the XJ, XF, XK Jaguars and the Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport,” according to Car, and will be upgraded with plug-in capability by 2015.

It is to be mentioned that Jaguar Land Rover is already active in four ongoing projects that are part of the Technology Strategy Board/ Department of Transport Low Carbon Vehicles Innovation Platform. These projects, which demonstrate technological innovations that could be applied to future vehicle models, are the ‘Limo-Green’ Series Hybrid; a Flywheel Hybrid System for Premium Vehicles; the REcycled ALuminium (Real) project; and a Range Extended Hybrid Electric Vehicle (REHEV).

Titled the “Best of Britain,” the show is comprised of cars from individual collectors in the mid-Atlantic states and is intended to illustrate why the adjective “British” is inseparable from the term “sports car.”

Cars in the show include a 1935 Triumph Gloria Southern Cross that was once part of the Henry Ford Museum, a 1960 MGA Twin Cam Coupe that raced at Sebring, and a 1966 Aston Martin DB6, one of the most potent sports cars of its era. The poster car, a 1933 Squire is the first of only seven ever built, and is considered by many to be among the most beautiful British sports cars ever made.

The “Best of Britain” show is included with regular museum admission, $12 adults, $10 seniors, $8 for students. Children under 8 are admitted free. The Museum is open Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Museum is located at 6825 Norwitch Drive, Philadelphia, Pa., 19153, directly in back of the Airport Automall and five minutes off Interstate 95.

A delectable line-up of Lister Jaguars – the Cambridge-built sports cars that took the big manufacturers on at their own [...]

A delectable line-up of Lister Jaguars – the Cambridge-built sports cars that took the big manufacturers on at their own game and won – will be showcased at this year’s Race Retro, held at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry from 12-14 March.

Examples of the earliest models – including founder Brian Lister’s first car, through the classic Lister ‘knobbly’ and Costin-bodied models and onto the 1990s Storm, which saw the name’s revival, will be reunited with the man behind the marque.

Their appearance coincides with a book written by highly-regarded Jaguar enthusiast Paul Skilleter, which chronicles the company’s sports cars, their founder Brian Lister and their successes during the late-1950s.

Closely associated with driver Archie Scott-Brown, Listers originally used MG and Bristol engines, but the switch to Jaguar engines and the shape of the car, dubbed ‘knobbly’, brought the company unparalleled success and exposure.

A later model, designed by then-leading aerodynamicist Frank Costin shepherded in a new cleaner, wind-cheating appearance, but didn’t repeat the success of earlier models.

Those earlier models proved successful in the fledgling historic motor sport scene, but the Lister name was revived in the 1990s with an all-new (but still Jaguar-powered) sports car. Laurence Pearce’s 600bhp Lister Storm ran at Le Mans and at Daytona, bringing home both the FIA GT Drivers’ and Teams’ Championship in 2000.

Brian Lister, who has provided major input to Paul Skilleter’s book, will be on hand to sign copies at Race Retro. Enthusiasts can buy a copy at an exclusive show discount to its normal retail price.

Adult ticket prices for Race Retro start from just £20 for Friday and £15 for Saturday and Sunday when booking in advance or upgrade to a VIP ticket with fantastic hospitality and a chance to meet our special guests. Children’s tickets are £5 on Friday or Saturday and free on Sunday. Parking is also free throughout. The show is open from 9.30am each day and closes at 5.30pm on Friday and Saturday and 4.30pm on Sunday.

There was a lot of eye rolling and worried looks when Ford sold Jaguar to India’s Tata. But based on the latest December figures, maybe there wasn’t reason to worry.

Jaguar sold 1,246 cars in December in the U.S., a 24% increase from last year. Land Rover sold 3,595 of its rugged SUVs, a 37% boost from a year ago. For the full year, combined sales of both brands dipped 14%, not bad considering how the overall auto industry saw sales plunge even more. Needless to say, execs are happy:

“Three consecutive months of Jaguar and Land Rover growth is a great way to end 2009, and a sign of better times to come,” said Jaguar-Land Rover North America President Gary Temple. “We start 2010 with sales momentum, strong product lineups for both brands, and the launch of the 2011 Jaguar XJ on its way. It is going to be a very exciting year.”

Jaguar and Land Rover are owned by a company now best known as the maker of the world’s cheapest car, the $2,500 Nano that plies the rough roads of India. Many were unsure what would happen to the storied British brands in the hands of a third-world automaker. But Tata looks like it’s succeeding — so far.

Ever since the halcyon days of Jaguar’s formative years the British car maker has had a happy knack of delivering some eye catching icons. As those early days of the 1940s and 1950s bore witness to the company’s founding father Sir William Lyons’ aim to produce cars boasting ‘grace, space and pace’ so the legendary big cats have continued to attract attention.

The latest is the Jaguar XKR which has unreservedly set its sights on supercar status, proving in many people’s eyes, to be perhaps the best looking mainstream Jaguar model to date.

There is very much a luxurious character to the XK and XKR body style, whether in hard-top coupe guise or the cloth cocooned convertible which is driven here. This is truly a sophisticated grand tourer with the power to move the sports car experience on to a new level courtesy of class leading body strength coupled with the lightest aluminum architecture leading to an on road performance boosting fuel efficiency and delivering some precise chassis dynamics.

You can’t really deliver a reworked model of anything without some cosmetic change and Jaguar has not failed here presenting an ever so subtle makeover with visible changes to the front bumpers, LED indicators worked into the wing mirrors and LED assistance to the tail lights.

Although pretty spacious for driver and front passenger, the XKR is very much a 2+2 with space in the rear perhaps best reserved for children, while the boot is actually surprisingly generous at 313 litres

The cabin is in harmony with the sporting character of a well crafted interior and the XKR’s luxury heritage shines through regardless of body style.

The thoughtfully laid out dashboard features new white background illumination while the XKR emphasises its performance qualities with red pointers for the instrumentation.

In what is very much a sporting model, Jaguar has continued to do the luxury bit in time honoured fashion. There is plenty of stitched leather to admire alongside shining chromework and some jewel like touches while Jaguar’s legendary use of real wood veneer has not been neglected.

Neither has the luxury touch for in-car features with the mod cons line-up including the likes of heated/cooled seating, plus a steering wheel which heats up, automatic climate control, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system with six-disc CD changer and user friendly sat nav.

The showcase feature is the Jaguar Drive Selector. Neatly packaged, this cylindrical driver aid rises from the centre console when you press the Start Button and links with the smooth operating six-speed automatic transmission to deliver stacks of exhilarating driver involvement.

Other driving aids in the guise of the Jaguar Control system can deliver Winter Mode and a hugely racy Dynamic Mode to boost grip.

True wind-in-your-hair driving awaits at the touch of a button which enables the triple lined fabric roof to be powered up or down in under 18 seconds. However, while the flush folding roof retracts completely into the bodywork behind the rear seats it doesn’t disturb the sporting lines of the XKR.

All the best Jaguars are renowned for their Grand Tourer abilities and this latest generation of XK sports coupes and convertibles are hugely capable of continuing the good work.

Niche sportscar manufacturer Lotus has scooped a ‘best driver’s car’ accolade for its Evora model. The award, from Autocar magazine, followed assessment on road and track around the South Downs and the Goodwood race circuit. Lotus beat off competition from Aston Martin, Nissan, Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini and Jaguar.

The mid-engined 2+2 Lotus Evora combines a super stiff extruded and bonded aluminium chassis with vehicle dynamics knowledge employed to tune its race-car derived double wishbone suspension.

Roger Becker, vehicle engineering director for Lotus, said: “The dynamic ability and driving experience of the Evora were the foundation of the engineering process and we are delighted that Autocar has recognised this by giving the Evora this accolade. The Evora offers the great Lotus driving experience in a very comfortable, practical, refined and efficient package, and with only 205 g/km of CO2 it shows that the Evora is a supercar for the 21st century.”

Luke Bennett, director of Lotus Cars, added: “We are really pleased to win this title as it not only demonstrates the engineering expertise and brilliant manufacturing at Lotus, but also asserts our position in this very exclusive and competitive sector. There is huge global demand for the Evora and to cope with this high demand we are taking on over 150 manufacturing staff, which is roughly a 30% increase.”

Executives at Jaguar Land Rover, the Midlands carmaker, are drawing up plans for an extended shutdown of its UK plants [...]

Executives at Jaguar Land Rover, the Midlands carmaker, are drawing up plans for an extended shutdown of its UK plants and a new round of staff layoffs as it struggles to cope with the slump in the world car market.

Preparation for the closures comes just days after the company released its new flagship, the latest version of the Jaguar XJ beloved by prime ministers and top British executives.

The car was launched at a glitzy party in London’s Saatchi Gallery on Thursday, to critical acclaim. Management at the group and its owner, India’s Tata Motors, are hoping the new car, which goes on sale in Britain early next year, will breathe some life into sales that have been struggling since last autumn.

Last month Tata Motors revealed that mounting losses at the UK carmaker had pushed it into its first annual loss of $522m (£322m) in seven years, and warned drastic cost-cutting should be expected. It said sales at its British subsidiary had fallen by about one third.

Jaguar Land Rover, which employs some 15,000 people in the UK, has so far avoided the lengthy shutdowns that some other carmakers have used to save money and run down stock. Honda, for example, closed its plant at Swindon for three months.

Instead, the Midlands group has taken other measures, such as extending its Christmas break to two weeks, moving to a four-day week and laying off around 2,000 temporary staff.

It is understood, however, that one option now under consideration is an extended closure of the three UK plants over the summer, accompanied by another round of job cuts.

Yesterday the company explained that there was no concrete plan. “We have always said there may be a need in the future to take further action, but there are no plans at present,” a spokesman said.

Jaguar Land Rover is still trying to convince the government to provide a loan guarantee that would unlock a £340m advance from the European Investment Bank. The EIB gave the green light two months ago, but cannot dispense the cash until Britain agrees to repay it if Jaguar Land Rover goes under.

The Sunday Times revealed in May that the EIB advance was being considered as part of a larger £800m package, a portion of which the government would guarantee. The talks then revolved round how Jaguar Land Rover could provide sufficient security — through its factories, plant and stock of cars — to allow the government and a group of banks, probably led by Lloyds and Royal Bank of Scotland, to take part.

The former directors of MG Rover are pressing the government to release the results of an inquiry by the Financial Reporting Review Panel into the accounts of the collapsed carmaker.

The report was completed in 2005, but its publication was stopped while a separate government inquiry into MG Rover went ahead. As The Sunday Times revealed last week, publication of that report has now been stopped while the Serious Fraud Office investigates.

The directors will put their case at a Freedom of Information Tribunal to be held in Manchester next month.

Jaguar has emerged from its stuffy, country-club period, the one that saw it essentially remake over and over and over [...]

Jaguar has emerged from its stuffy, country-club period, the one that saw it essentially remake over and over and over again the original XJ for 41 years. Jaguar now wants to be sexy and modern. Founder Sir William Lyons would most certainly approve.

He was never a man to look backwards, to live in yesterday, endlessly reliving the great triumphs of the past. He was a forward-looking, innovative fellow. His cars of the 1950s and into the 1960s were cutting-edge and daring for their time.

That’s what Jaguar is trying to recapture.

“It’s about making Jaguars that are quintessentially Jaguars,” O’Driscoll said.

But this is a nervous business. Jaguar, now part of Tata’s integrated Jaguar Land Rover Group (JLR), is not swimming in dough. Far from it.

Tata Motors’ Indian business, which relies mostly on truck sales, made a profit for its last fiscal year, but the group as a whole was dragged into the red with a consolidated net loss of 25.1 billion rupees ($576-million). The problem was a 32-per-cent fall in sales volumes at Jaguar and Land Rover combined.

Land Rover has been the hardest hit by the global recession. Its sales fell 39 per cent to 120,000 units during the June, 2008, to March, 2009, period under Tata ownership. Jaguar sales fell only 4 per cent to 47,000 car.

But in the bad news there was something encouraging to be found. Jag’s XF mid-size sedan, launched last year, rescued the brand’s overall results. The car is a hit. And the design cues first shown in the XF are advanced much, much further in the new XJ. That has the Jag types feeling pretty hopeful.

They have some other cards to play, too. For nearly 20 years under Ford Motor Co. ownership, Jaguar was rebuilt entirely and that effort sucked up billions and billions of dollars. Ford had no choice. When the company arrived on the scene in 1989, Ford’s manufacturing experts were appalled. They said the only worse plants in the whole world were Lada factories in Moscow.

Ford’s investments never paid off in terms of profits for the Detroit auto maker, but they are a real asset for Tata. Jaguar’s plants are modern and efficient and they spin out some of the best-built cars in the world.

J.D. Power and Associates three-year Vehicle Dependability Study has Jaguar at the very top among brands, tied with Buick for the No. 1 spot.

That means that, in the latest study, Jag and Buick dethroned Lexus for the first time since the Japanese luxury brand has been a part of the survey. Alas, Land Rover is at the very bottom of that study.

Meanwhile, both Jag and Land Rover are baking in the types of features and designs that send owners swooning. In J.D. Power’s last APEAL study, released just last week, Jaguar was ranked second overall and Land Rover ninth.

The APEAL study, which stands for automotive performance execution and layout, is a so-called “things-gone-right” study. It asks owners to rank brands in terms of how pleased they are with their vehicles and the brand.

So Tata has something to work with here. But the Indian company and its British managers better work fast.

When Tata bought JLR last year from Ford for $2.3-billion (U.S.), most of the money was borrowed and that’s still the case today. JLR needs to make a success out of everything it does now; there is no margin for error.

At a recent press conference in India to announce the launch of JLR sales in Tata’s home market, Tata vice-chairman Ravi Kant predicted good things for JLR once new models like the XJ hit showrooms and this painful recession eases.

“We feel once we are able to get through this difficult and very, very challenging period, [JLR] has an extremely bright future,” Kant said. “The plans that have been made show that it will have a very good turnaround and it will be an extremely profitable company.”

Yet even as Kant was speaking, JLR was planning on finally ending production of the ill-conceived and poorly executed X-Type at the company’s Halewood plant in central England. The official announcement came last week, resulting in 300 jobs lost, on top of the more than 2,000 job cuts JLR has already made.

Those cuts, along with a proposed LRX “green” vehicle that has won a £27-million ($49-million Canadian) British government development grant, as well as a €340-million loan pledged by the European Investment Bank, are part of a package of moves being taken to keep JLR viable even as new models such as the 2010 XJ are developed and launched.

A lean JLR with sexy and desirable vehicles marketed in daring ways has given Ratan Tata the ammunition to defend the decision to take on billions in debt to buy the British brands.

“It was a terrific decision that we took to bid for these two brands and own them,” the chairman told reporters at a recent Nano event. “We are going through a downturn today that has unfortunately somewhat condemned Jaguar and Land Rover in perception, but that perception is very wrong.”

And perception is what the London party was absolutely all about. Jaguar will only succeed if it is perceived to be vibrant, not stuffy. The brand must be hip, not retro. The cars must be sleek and cool and daring, not understated and quietly elegant and utterly boring.

Ian Callum, the Scotsman who has been Jaguar’s design director for a decade, does suggest, however, that the new XJ is linked to the past, to the original XJ launched in 1968, a year before Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon.

“One of my greatest strengths, if I have any, is I understand the old XJ. You know what a beautiful car it is. You have to put that car in its place in 1968,” he said.

“It was a beautiful car and its proportions are fantastic. So logged in my mind is exactly what that car meant in 1968. I remember it so clearly. I learned a lot of my principles of design off that car.

“And being that familiar with it, knowing what made it so special, for me it was a very natural thing to do – to go into the 21st century and redo it, but in a 21st-century context. Not 1968 context. It was a very natural thing to do [the 2010 XJ].”

Jaguar and its partner Land Rover are hoping buyers will naturally gravitate to the new take on a storied brand.
