Dont get me wrong, I like BMC 1100s, I passed my test in one in '77 but they must of been the fastest rusting car of all time.

To recap. My dad had two of them, the first one was a 1963 Morris 1100 which he bought in '67 when I was 7 and Dr Beeching was threatening to close our local railway line down, which is why he bought a car. (it was repreived as well, and is still operating!)

It was British Racing Green with a pale green interior and looked super but within a couple of years the rear subframe had rotted and the floorpan had to be replaced, the inner wings went, causing the battery tray to collapse.

However, he had it welded up and ran it until '74 when he part exed it for a 1971 Limeflower Morris 1300, which was the one I learned to drive in

By this time I was getting into cars so we did make quite an effort to keep the rot at bay and regularly cleaned out under the wheelarches etc and kept it well painted underneath as well as Waxoyl, but it didnt seem to make any difference and by about '79 the rot had set in. The sills had to be replaced, followed by the rear subframe and the door bottoms rotted out. Eventually the front wings also rotted right through then one of the hydrolastic displacer units packed up.

By '85 it was in a bit of a state and the gearbox then packed up which led to him getting rid of it.

My point is, we just about got one to last 14 years with not much mileage and a fair bit of maintainance, so how have you guys managed to keep one on the road until now?

Surprised

Both my Riley and my Wolseley were last on the road (before this/last year) in 1983, so they are really only 19/17 years old not 44/42. Very Happy

Regular maintenance and shorter life in oil changes. Can't go 5to 10 thousand kms on an oil cycle due to both the sump and engine having shared dirt.

Surely the ones that have lasted are the cars that were owned by their first owner for a long time and garaged?
